Smart or Plus: which 4-inch MDT switch for which room

1 November 2026 by

The MDT Glass Touch Smart Plus differs from the Smart in five ways that matter on a wall: an RGBW light that can signal status, a loudspeaker for acoustic feedback, time switches, a code lock for four users instead of one, and two binary inputs. The display is the same 4 inch, 720 × 720 panel in both, so the choice is made room by room, not feature by feature.

What the two versions share

Before the differences, the common ground, because it explains why the decision can wait. According to MDT's documents both versions have a 4 inch colour display of 720 × 720 pixels, one to four buttons per page, up to 32 functions, KNX Data Secure and a built-in room temperature controller. Both need a 24 V DC auxiliary supply, and both come in white or black. The first post in this series covers that supply and the wall box in detail.

In practice this means the wall box, the cable route and the supply are planned in the same way whichever version is chosen. The Plus adds inputs that need their own cable, which is covered below, but the rest of the electrical design does not change.

Every row comes from MDT's two datasheets, GTS-04TW.01S for the Smart and GTS-P4TW.01S for the Plus, both dated 04/26. Check the datasheet of the exact version you order before the schedule is final.

What each extra is actually for

Circumferential light. MDT says the Plus's RGBW light signals individual operating statuses and alarms, and doubles as an orientation light. The Smart has a white orientation light only. Colour is a useful way to show a status from across the room, and a distraction in a bedroom, so it is worth deciding where each applies.

Loudspeaker. MDT describes it as acoustic feedback, a tone when a button is pressed or a function runs. It does not play music, and it should not be read as an intercom or a voice assistant.

Time switches. The Plus has six, so a simple schedule does not need a separate time-switch device elsewhere in the project. For a complex schedule, a central logic device is still the better place.

Code lock. Four users each get their own code. The sensible use is to release a function, such as a scene or a relay, for people who should not need a phone. Treat it as a convenience at the door, not as the lock itself, since the strength of the door depends on the lock and the cabling behind it.

Binary inputs. Two inputs for potential-free contacts let a window contact, a door contact or a nearby push button report to the KNX line through the panel, instead of through a separate input module in the box. They need conductors to the panel, which is one more item for the pre-wiring list.

Second room controller. Open-plan rooms sometimes have two climate circuits. A second controller on the same panel can serve both, provided the HVAC design actually splits the space that way.

Which room, in our opinion

This section is Morion's opinion, not MDT's. A reasonable person can choose the other way.

Bedroom: Smart. A bedroom switch should be quiet and easy to find in the dark. A white orientation light, no tones and one controller are an advantage here. The reason to choose Plus is practical, for example a window contact next to the bed.

Living room: Plus if the room has two climate zones or a contact to read, otherwise Smart. Living rooms are where the coloured status light and the second controller are most likely to earn their place, and where a clean wall matters most to the designer.

Entrance: Plus. Four code users and two inputs suit a door. The inputs can take the door contact, and the codes can release a welcome scene for household staff or family without keys on the wall. Keep the physical lock separate from the panel.

Guest room: Smart. Guests do not know the house. A short, clear page with a few buttons will serve them better than a panel with more capability than anyone will use.

A simple way to decide

  1. Start every room at Smart.
  2. Move a room to Plus only if it needs a code, a contact input, a second climate zone or time switches inside the panel.
  3. Do not move a room to Plus for the coloured light alone, unless the designer asks for it.
  4. Write the choice into the schedule of switches before the electrical drawing is final, so the extra inputs are wired while the walls are open.

The MDT KNX range at Morion shows the other panels and sensors that sit alongside these. For prices and availability in India, please ask us.

Questions people ask

Can I mix Smart and Plus in the same house?

Yes. They are separate KNX devices and each is programmed on its own. Keeping the same layout style on both helps the house feel consistent.

Does the Plus speaker play music?

No. MDT describes it as a loudspeaker for acoustic feedback, such as a tone on a button press.

Does it matter whether I pick white or black?

Colour is a matter of finish only. MDT lists both versions in both colours, so choose against the wall and the other plates in the room.
