Blauberg HRV vs Exhaust Fan — Do You Actually Need One?
For most Indian homeowners, "ventilation" means one thing: the exhaust fan in the bathroom, and maybe one over the kitchen stove. That's not wrong, exactly — it's just a much smaller category of product than an HRV or ERV system, and the two get compared as if they're interchangeable when they're solving different problems.
What a Standard Exhaust Fan Does
An exhaust fan pulls air out of a room and pushes it outside. That's the whole job. It clears steam after a shower or smoke from the stove, and it does that well. What it doesn't do: bring in fresh air to replace what it removed, manage the temperature or humidity of the air coming in behind it, or run continuously without spiking your AC load if you leave it on.
For a bathroom, that's fine. For a bedroom or a whole home, it's a one-way valve — air leaves, and whatever comes in through gaps and windows comes in unfiltered and unconditioned.
What an HRV/ERV Does Differently
A heat/energy recovery ventilator brings fresh outdoor air in and stale indoor air out at the same time, and — this is the part exhaust fans don't do — recovers most of the heat or coolness from the outgoing air and transfers it to the incoming air. Industry figures put that recovery efficiency in the 70–90% range, which is why running one continuously doesn't blow up your AC bill the way just opening a window would.
The result is continuous fresh air, filtered and pre-conditioned, without the temperature swing you'd get from passive ventilation.

If it's a single bathroom, used a few times a day, in a home where the rest of the house has decent natural airflow — a basic exhaust fan genuinely does the job. There's no reason to install more than you need.
Where it stops being enough: a sealed, AC-heavy home (increasingly the norm in Indian cities), a bedroom or living room where people spend hours a day, or any space where you've actually measured poor air quality and want it fixed, not just ventilated on and off. At that point, the fan is only ever half-solving the problem.

You can, but AC alone recirculates the same indoor air — it cools it, it doesn't refresh it. CO2 and indoor pollutants build up in a sealed, AC-only room over time.
